![]() If not, do the chain - it may return some of the original driveability for a while. If you plan on keeping the truck a while longer, do the chainset If you plan to keep the truck, go with the gearset The few complaints range from the expense vs replacing the chain only - yeah, like that's worth doing! - to no significant improvement as scientifically tested on the ole *ss-dyno. There are a number of trucks with over a hunnerd kmi on the gearset, with no problems evidenced. 'Course, I add 8oz STP - which is really good for gears and timing train - to each oil change. The gearset cannot be heard above the normal pre-cup rattle at stock -0.5deg TDCO, much less the noises resulting from increased timing at -1.5deg TDCO. The chainsaw massacre audio experience was a prime reason I did the conversion from a new chainset several years back. ![]() ![]() The gearset noise is also more of a whirring sound, rather than the 'chainsaw on an iron pipe' histrionics emitted by the chainset. If you'll walk out, start your truck, pop the oil filler cap off and listen in - the noise from the gearset is less than half the noise you'll hear from the chainset, new or used. But gas engines are far cheaper to build than a diesel and I just dont want to spend thousands for a $300 mistake. the ability to degree i nthe cam/crank aspect. Generally longer run times between changes, They dont wear like a chain set does. I do like the benifits of a gear drive in the gassers, exact cam timing on the drive and coast side. Now I have no idea if the crank on a diesel is manufactured to withstand a certain amount of harmoonics that is inherant in a diesel, but can it withstand the added harmonics? Also do these harmonics effect any other parts, like the injection pump or anything that is in contact with the rotating gear set operation? Each timing gear set is built from high-quality components and assembly to provide long-lasting performance and the precise timing your engine needs. I have found that gear drives do create harmonics that fatigue steel and cast cranks to the point of failure. JEGS offers a large selection of timing gears from the best manufacturers in the automotive aftermarket including Cloyes, Melling, COMP Cams, Speedmaster, JEGS, and many others. I have had years of experience in running gear drive sets in street cars to race cars (that require mandatory gear drive)I have run Milodon,Erson and other fixed and floating gear timing sets. Granted my question also included gas engines. I asked this question a while ago about gear drive timing and the effects on a diesel.
